In addition to being a popular tourist destination, Canada is appealing to students. It is a developed country with excellent educational methods and renowned international degrees. As a result, many parents want their children to attend Canadian primary or secondary schools, while adults aspire to begin college or graduate studies there. Students must have a student visa and study permit in order to do so.
POINTS TO KNOW ABOUT STUDENT VISAS:
Before applying for a student visa, every student must have the basic knowledge of the following key points that will help them in the future.
1.What is SDS/NON SDS ?:
Most of the students we have seen while counselling do not have knowledge about the visa categories in which they can apply On June 7, 2018, Canada introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS) system, which makes it easier for Indian students to study at Canadian universities and colleges..
What is GIC?
A GIC is a guaranteed rate of return fixed-term investment in Canada.
To put it another way, if you’re an Indian student interested in studying in Canada, you’ll need to create a Canadian bank account online with one of the recognised banks. Once your account is established, the bank will place your GIC in a student or investment account that you will only be able to access once you arrive in Canada. It will only release your payments once your identification has been verified when you arrive in the country. While you can get a lump sum payment upon arrival, the remaining funds are disbursed monthly or bi-weekly over a 10- to 12-month period.
SDS Program Requirements:
Students wishing to engage in an SDS curriculum must satisfy the following requirements:
•Admission to a full-time programme at a Designated Learning Institution, such as a university, college, institute, or CEGEP.
•An IELTS score of 6 overall, with a minimum band of 6 in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), obtained within the last two years.
•Purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD$10,000 to cover living expenses for the first year of stay in Canada.
•An upfront medical check-up at least one week before submitting the visa application;
•Proof of payment of the tuition price for one (1) year
Non-SDS:
Non-SDS visa applications are evaluated for candidates who do not qualify for any of the above-mentioned provisions. They must apply for a visa under the General Study Permit category. Additional Financial Documentation is required in case of NON-SDS.
All other English Proficiency Tests than IELTS, fall under NON-SDS Category.
2. KNOW ABOUT PGWP (Post Graduate Work Permit)
Post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) are open work licences provided to international students who have finished a program of study in Canada. The holder of a PGWP can work for any company in Canada for as many hours as they like.
PGWPs last for eight to three years and are a fantastic way to obtain valuable work experience in Canada. After working in Canada, a candidate has a variety of alternatives for gaining permanent status.
What is a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and how does it work?
International students who have graduated from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution are eligible for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) . PGWPs are open work permits, which allow foreign nationals to work for any company, anywhere in the country.
Quick information about the PGWP
Who may apply for a PGWP?
A foreign national must be at least 18 years old and have completed an 8-month full-time programme in Canada to be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The study programme must have been completed in one of the following types of programmes at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Furthermore, a foreign national must apply for a work permit within 180 days of the conclusion of their educational program.
Eligible Level of Studies
The following levels of study and programs are eligible for PGWPs:
How long does a PGWP take ?
The processing time for a PGWP might range from 80 to 180 days. You are able to work in Canada while waiting for your PGWP, as long as you applied before your student permit expired.
From the day you finished all of the prerequisites of your course of study, you have 180 days to apply for your PGWP.
If you leave Canada after finishing your education, you can now apply for a PGWP from another country. Previously, applications for post-graduation work permits had to be submitted solely from within Canada. Additional paperwork may be asked if a PGWP application is filed from outside of Canada, depending on the visa office that will process the application.
Can I apply for a PGWP many times?
A PGWP can only be applied for once. If you want to continue your studies after your first programme, or if you wish to pursue a lengthier degree programme in Canada, you should apply for your PGWP early. Applying after the longest length of study will result in a PGWP with a three-year validity term.
