Canada Student Visa

In addition to being a popular tourist destination, Canada is appealing to students. It is a developed country with excellent educational methods and renowned international degrees. As a result, many parents want their children to attend Canadian primary or secondary schools, while adults aspire to begin college or graduate studies there. Students must have a student visa and study permit in order to do so.

POINTS TO KNOW ABOUT STUDENT VISAS:

Before applying for a student visa, every student must have the basic knowledge of the following key points that will help them in the future.

Most of the students we have seen while counselling do not have knowledge about the visa categories in which they can apply.  On June 7, 2018, Canada introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS) system, which makes it easier for Indian students to study at Canadian universities and colleges.

SDS, which replaced the previous SPP initiative, has more severe rules and regulations to follow. However, for individuals who fit the criteria, it may be tremendously useful because it facilitates visa processing for SDS-eligible DLI institutions and needs fewer financial paperwork.

Students need to have a basic understanding of Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) and Guaranteed Investment Certificate(GIC) before knowing about SDS and NON-SDS.

A DLI is a university, school, or college that has been recognised by a provincial or territory authority to accept foreign students. In Canada, DLI covers all public institutions, colleges, and major private universities and colleges. As a result, if you're seeking for a study visa, you'll need a letter of approval from a DLI. You should be aware that only DLIs are authorised to recruit overseas students; non-DLIs are not permitted to enrol international students.
A GIC is a guaranteed rate of return fixed-term investment in Canada. To put it another way, if you're an Indian student interested in studying in Canada, you'll need to create a Canadian bank account online with one of the recognised banks. Once your account is established, the bank will place your GIC in a student or investment account that you will only be able to access once you arrive in Canada. It will only release your payments once your identification has been verified when you arrive in the country. While you can get a lump sum payment upon arrival, the remaining funds are disbursed monthly or bi-weekly over a 10- to 12-month period.

SDS Program Requirements:

Students wishing to engage in an SDS curriculum must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Admission to a full-time programme at a Designated Learning Institution, such as a university, college, institute, or CEGEP.
  • An IELTS score of 6 overall, with a minimum band of 6 in each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking), obtained within the last two years.
  • Purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD$10,000 to cover living expenses for the first year of stay in Canada.
  • An upfront medical check-up at least one week before submitting the visa application.
  • Proof of payment of the tuition price for one (1) year
  • All visa applications must be submitted electronically over the internet.

Post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) are open work licences provided to international students who have finished a program of study in Canada. The holder of a PGWP can work for any company in Canada for as many hours as he/she likes.

PGWPs last for eight to three years and are a fantastic way to obtain valuable work experience in Canada. After working in Canada, a candidate has a variety of alternatives for gaining permanent status.

International students who have graduated from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution are eligible for Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWPs) . PGWPs are open work permits, which allow foreign nationals to work for any company, anywhere in the country.

Quick information about the PGWP

  • A PGWP might be valid for anything from eight months to three years.
  • A PGWP will not be granted for a period of time longer than the applicant’s time in Canada.
  • The PGWP will typically last for the same amount of time as the applicant’s study period, up to a maximum of three years.
  • You are eligible for a PGWP equal to the duration of your program of study if more than 50% of your program is completed through in-person sessions.
  • The length of your PGWP will be the same as the length of your program of study if you studied part-time or conducted accelerated courses.

A foreign national must be at least 18 years old and have completed an 8-month full-time programme in Canada to be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The study programme must have been completed in one of the following types of programmes at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Furthermore, a foreign national must apply for a work permit within 180 days of the conclusion of their educational program.

Eligible Level of Studies

The following levels of study and programs are eligible for PGWPs:

  • public post-secondary school, such as a college, trade/technical school or university, or CEGEP in Quebec; or
  • private post-secondary school that operates under the same rules as public schools (only applies to certain institutions in Quebec); or
  • private secondary or post-secondary school (in Quebec) that offers qualifying programs of 900 hours or longer, leading to a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP); or
  • Canadian private school that can legally award degrees under provincial law only for those enrolled in study programs leading to a degree as authorized by the province.

The processing time for a PGWP might range from 80 to 180 days. You are able to work in Canada while waiting for your PGWP, as long as you applied before your student permit expired. From the day you finished all of the prerequisites of your course of study, you have 180 days to apply for your PGWP. If you leave Canada after finishing your education, you can now apply for a PGWP from another country. Previously, applications for post-graduation work permits had to be submitted solely from within Canada. Additional paperwork may be asked if a PGWP application is filed from outside of Canada, depending on the visa office that will process the application.
A PGWP can only be applied for once. If you want to continue your studies after your first programme, or if you wish to pursue a lengthier degree programme in Canada, you should apply for your PGWP early. Applying after the longest length of study will result in a PGWP with a three-year validity term.
